Harmony Around the World: Iceland

There are so many ways that a woman over 40 can achieve balance and harmony in her life. A balanced life is definitely not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. When tending to wellness practices the happiest woman is one who sticks with activities that fill her with joy rather than jumping on the next fad or maintaining a practice that has started to feel like a chore.
Wellness inspiration can be found around the globe. Many of us over 40 women like to consider common practices in other parts of the world that can be adopted to bring balance into our own lives. For example, when looking to Iceland, harmony and community are centered around geothermal energy. Geothermal what? Don’t worry. It’s just science. Geothermal energy is simply clean, sustainable heat that comes from the Earth due to volcanic activity.
Because of geography, Iceland is blessed with many hot springs and geothermal pools that offer women wellness activities that benefit the mind, body and spirit.
Swimming and soaking in warm water are favorite pastimes of many women in Iceland.
Obviously, swimming is a great workout for the body. Swimming is perfect for endurance and heart health, but it doesn’t put a body at risk with repetitive high-impact movements. More than the athletic advantages, though, in Iceland geothermal pools are a center for community and socializing. Large geothermal pools exist where neighbors and friends gather to socialize and enjoy this activity together.
Hot Springs provide a surprising number of health benefits. Because the water travels through soil, it contains a high number of minerals our bodies can absorb during a soak. Wellness properties for the minerals provided by hot spring water include anti-aging, pain relief, healing, endorphin boosts and more. Plus, the state of total relaxation reached in a warm water soak can help boost creativity and problem solving.
Fortunately, you don’t need geothermal energy to enjoy the wellness benefits of a warm soak or swim. Some ideas for bringing a little Iceland harmony into your life include hot tubbing, swimming in a heated pool, saltwater swimming, and trying a float tank. Whatever your choice, include friends – old or new- in your activity to help stimulate all your senses.
